Hong Kong takes back seat as China’s Xi promotes neighbor as future ‘model city’

China’s President Xi Jinping praised the tech-hub city of Shenzhen in a landmark speech on Wednesday, leaving some puzzling over the future of nearby Hong Kong, as China’s traditional global foothold.

Xi said Shenzhen, often dubbed China’s Silicon Valley and home to tech giants Huawei and Tencent, was making “historic leaps” and “achieving miracles.”

He also announced that the area would be given more leeway to pursue opening-up reforms and become a “model city for a strong socialist country.”

Once a small fishing village adjacent to Hong Kong, Shenzhen is now home to about 13 million and was transformed in 1980 by veteran Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, after he designated it a “Special Economic Zone,” carving out capitalist privileges in the staunchly communist country.

Retracing Deng’s footprints 40 years later during his own southern tour this week, Xi announced Shenzhen would again become a testing ground for foreign investment and

What can three teenagers do when armed with reporters’ notebooks? Take home an award in a national journalism competition.

When 17-year-old Maybelline Samoza heard that her three-person Gadsden County High School newspaper had won second place in the American Scholastic Press Association competition, she said it felt like her heart “dropped for a moment.”

Samoza didn’t know that her English and journalism teacher, John Nogowski, had even entered their student newspaper, the Gadsden County Gazette, into the journalism competition during the teenager’s last year at the school. Nogowski told her to check her email to fact check him.

“I thought he was just kidding,” she said in a recent interview. “I saw the certificate,

Sei Young Kim takes 2-shot lead at KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

Kim went on another streaky run of birdies at Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pa., shooting a 3-under 67 to hold the lead and positioning herself to put that label to rest at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Kim sits at 7-under 203, two strokes ahead of Brooke Henderson and Anna Nordqvist, and will try to win it Sunday on a rare early-morning tee time.

“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous, but I’m also excited about going into the final day,” Kim said.

The tournament was delayed three months because of the coronavirus pandemic, landing its final round smack on a packed sports Sunday. The PGA of America had to get creative with the tee times with NBC having other programming commitments on the weekend. Kim, Henderson and Nordqvist tee off at 8:49 a.m. and the last group goes off at 9:16 a.m. The TV window is noon to 2 p.m. on

Donald Trump takes shot at Nancy Pelosi’s looks amid coronavirus criticism

In the midst of an hours-long Twitter tear on the “Russia Hoax,” the stimulus bill and charges of election fraud, President Trump took time out to take a shot at Nancy Pelosi’s attractiveness.

The House speaker had called Mr. Trump’s behavior a “brazen invitation” to the virus as the president was being hospitalized, prompting Mr. Trump to respond and raise the ante.

“Wear your mask in the ‘beauty’ parlor, Nancy!” Mr. Trump wrote.

The president was alluding to Mrs. Pelosi having been videotaped at a San Francisco salon that was supposed to have been closed under city law and not in a mask, to boot.

In referring to the ESalon facility, Mr. Trump used sarcastic quote marks around the word “beauty.”

Relations between Mr. Trump and Mrs. Pelosi have been frozen for

Kentucky attorney general takes aim at lawyer for Breonna Taylor’s family: ‘This is the Ben Crump model’

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) on Tuesday criticized civil rights lawyer Ben Crump for citing allegations of bias as reasoning for a special prosecutor to reopen the case surrounding Breonna Taylor’s death, with Cameron saying it was “irresponsible” for Crump “to push such narratives, such falsehoods.”

Cameron’s response came after Crump, who is representing Taylor’s family, shared an open letter to Cameron claiming that the attorney general was “biased throughout the process and intentionally deprived justice for Breonna and her family.”

Last week, Cameron revealed that he did not present any murder charges to the grand jury that heard the case of Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman who was shot and killed during a police drug raid on her apartment.

In a Tuesday interview on “Fox & Friends,” Cameron said the claims made in the open letter did not accurately reflect the reality of the investigation.

Decatur takes over recycling, adds clothing pickup point

DECATUR — The covid-19 pandemic affected more than just restaurants and other small businesses.

The recycling industry took a big loss due to the pandemic, forcing companies to shut down pickup in many area towns. But Decatur worked out a deal that would continue the recycling program that many area residents and businesses used on almost a daily basis.

Mayor Bob Tharp received a correspondence dated Aug. 26 from Wendy Bland, director of the Benton County Solid Waste District, stating the recycling program in Decatur will be discontinued Sept. 4.

“We are saddened and deeply regret that the Solid Waste District no longer has funding available to provide the free recycling trailer service,” Bland wrote. “It was not caused by the District and is not something that we have control over. This was a sudden blow to our budget that was completely unexpected. We had very little notice ourselves in
