Talk about social distancing. Asos is working overtime to stay aloof from its online rag trade rivals. Fast fashion has long been bedevilled by accusations of waste and exploitation. Aim-quoted Boohoo is combating allegations of sweatshop practices among suppliers in Leicester. Aim-quoted Asos, which also sells cheap togs for twenty quid to twenty somethings via its website, is doing its best to set itself apart. 

Nick Beighton, chief executive, drove home his message about sustainability repeatedly on Wednesday: Asos looked after its suppliers, paid its employees properly, was mindful of waste and treated its workers “correctly”, he said. Watching Netflix’s The Social Dilemma was interesting and disturbing.  It was interesting to see how it was constructed and disturbing to see that many of the psychological techniques vilified by the documentary were used to tell their story.   As a persuasive piece of media, it is very successful.  Part documentary, part drama, it hits all the anxiety triggers of the last few years.  The content is compelling and frightening and also one-sided.  The issues raised are serious and important, but not new.  The call to action is to put down your smartphone and back away, not slowly but post-haste.  Not only is that totally unrealistic, it leaves people less equipped and more afraid, especially during a pandemic when technology can be a lifeline.

Instagram brings shopping to Reels, IGTV as commerce commands social spotlight

NYC Police Officers Break Up Indoor Wedding with Nearly 300 Guests in Violation of Social Distancing Rules

A wedding with nearly 300 guests in New York was broken up by sheriff’s deputies over the weekend.

The illegal gathering was shut down around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night, the New York City Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter. A total of 284 people were in attendance at the event — a number well over the city’s social distancing guidelines that limit gatherings to 50 people — which took place at the Royal Elite Palace in Woodside, Queens.

The Royal Elite Palace did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

NBC New York reported that the wedding featured food and alcohol being served, as well as a live band.

The wedding hall’s manager and owner were both charged with multiple offenses for violating the rules in place because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), NBC News reported.
