Sally Hawkins has a fondness for characters that, in her words, “fall in the gaps.”

“I’m aligned with people in life that may not be noticed or are generally stigmatized,” she tells EW. “Those stories are always more interesting. Every single person has a voice. Whether it’s somebody who’s not sorted out or is part of a section of society that is not necessarily treated with compassion. Spinning that on its head and seeing them with love — as soon as we open our hearts and our minds, then we can begin to change.”

In some of the most startling cultural news of the week, Amazon announced that Sacha Baron Cohen will return as fictional Kazakh journalist Borat in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The film, which was shot during the pandemic, will hit Amazon on Oct. 23.

On the casting side of the news, Jamie Foxx is apparently set to reprise his role as Electro in the next Spider-Man movie. Foxx first played Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. Does the fact that Foxx will be battling a new Spider-Man mean there are some multiverse shenanigans going on, or just that Foxx makes a really great Electro?

Eternal Beauty review: A perfect showcase for Shape of Water star Sally Hawkins

Guillermo del Toro once said that when he casts a movie, he casts eyes. The main eyes in his Best Picture winner The Shape of Water belong to Sally Hawkins, and they’re impossible to confuse with anyone else’s. There’s a warmth to her face that’s used well in films like Paddington and Happy-Go-Lucky, but there’s a brittleness to her features, too. Her forehead always seems furrowed in sadness or concern, even when she’s smiling, as if she could break down at any moment. Her latest role, as the lead in Craig Roberts’ Eternal Beauty, takes full advantage of that dangerous, fragile quality.

The ever-dependable Sally Hawkins brings warmth to this uneven mental-health memoir

Mental illness and movie quirk make awkward bedfellows, and there are times in Welsh actor Craig Roberts’s second film as writer-director that this uneasy relationship shows its uncomfortable side. But there’s also plenty of real, recognisable pain in Roberts’s story of Jane (Sally Hawkins), a woman living with a form of schizophrenia, whose illness isn’t helped by the various self-regarding, unsympathetic members of her family we meet, from her brittle, angry mum (Penelope Wilton) to her two world-weary sisters (Billie Piper, Alice Lowe, neither of whom get enough time to shine). 

There’s a slight Miss Havisham vibe to the film’s framing as we flash back to an aborted wedding earlier in Jane’s life (when she’s played by Saint Maud’s Morfydd Clark) – but thankfully Eternal Beauty isn’t so simple as to suggest that day as the entire root

‘Eternal Beauty’ Review: Sally Hawkins, in Another Transformation

The Welsh actor Craig Roberts dedicates his second directorial feature to “the real Calamity Jane,” making clear that “Eternal Beauty” is based on actual people in his life. (He’s also said so in interviews.) The Jane he presents in this movie — he’s also the writer — is played by Sally Hawkins, and her performance is another startling transformation in her filmography. (She’s a two-time Oscar nominee, for her work in “The Shape of Water” and “Happy Go Lucky,” playing two very different characters.)

Jane suffers from a form of schizophrenia. Her state is not entirely debilitating but is certainly erratic. And it manifests itself in often alienating behavior. She buys her own Christmas presents, opens them in front of her family and hands out receipts to the designated givers.

She definitely shouldn’t drive. She almost breaks her nephew’s neck when coming to a sudden, unnecessary stop on the road.

‘Eternal Beauty’ Review: Sally Hawkins in Quirky Mental Health Comedy

“What if there’s no such thing as happiness, only moments of not being depressed?” So asks Jane, the paranoid schizophrenic heroine of “Eternal Beauty,” and it’s one of the more thought-provoking lines in Craig Roberts’ earnest but ungainly sophomore feature — a film that itself stumbles upon moments of clarity without ever finding a happy or consistent groove. Making a comedy about mental illness is a tall enough order without the tricky tonal embellishments, filched from influences as disparate as Paul Thomas Anderson and Terry Gilliam, that Roberts has attempted on an otherwise slender script. With an assist from Sally Hawkins’ valiantly committed lead performance, the result occasionally summons the genuinely disoriented perspective of an unstable protagonist, but more often, it’s the filmmaking that seems to spiral out of control.
