Could Demand Side Innovation Save An Imploding Industry?

The fashion industry has been imploding for a while now and, thanks to the drastic changes COVID has brought, the need for a change is greater than ever. Over inflated inventory and constant surplus issues, all of which have been a thorn in the side for years, are even more painful and in danger of threatening retail than before.

In the recent New York Times article, Sweatpants Forever, Irina Aleksande takes a look at just how fashion has been further imploding under the added weight of the Coronavirus. Stuck on a precipice of change since the 2008 recession, the industry has struggled to truly find its footing in terms of producing what consumers really want

Demand for UK fashion designers have surged in the past six months with online searches seeing a 125% increase.

Latest figures by gig economy platform Fiverr, reveal searches for clothing design have also risen 116%.

This report comes at a time when side hustles are surging in Britain, with one in three Brits out of work or on furlough setting up side hustles for extra income.

Peggy de Lange, vice-president of international expansion at Fiverr said: “This data is not surprising given how the fashion industry has transformed during COVID-19. In-person retail experiences are less desirable to the average consumer when it’s so easy to shop online safely. This shift has been advantageous to small independent fashion brands who are under less pressure to be sold by retailers, or wedded to fashion calendars.”

As Pandemic Boosts Suburban-Home Demand, Startup Sells a New Ownership Model

Americans feeling trapped at home during the pandemic want more space. The creators of a new startup think they can deliver it with a fresh spin on the timeshare business.

Pacaso, a venture between two Zillow Group Inc. alumni, is using a vacation model to sell ownership in weekend homes.

Similar to a traditional timeshare, Pacaso will give buyers the right to use the house a certain number of weeks a year. But where timeshares typically cluster in holiday hot spots like beach towns or mountain resorts, many of Pacaso’s homes will be located in suburban and other residential neighborhoods.

“This is not just for Napa Valley, Santa Barbara or fancy vacation destinations,” said Spencer Rascoff, Zillow Group’s former chief executive and a Pacaso co-founder. “This is for that lake outside of Detroit, where maybe you’ve had your eye on getting a little lodge.”

Skilled trades are in high demand. A new Orange County program trains women for them.

CARRBORO

Jasmine Jones was working in maintenance at the University of North Carolina when the coronavirus pandemic began. Then the virus hit, the school closed, and Jones was unemployed.

She found work as a plumbing associate at a Lowe’s in Cary, but wanted to get her hands dirty.

“I just want to do manual labor instead of being behind a desk taking phone calls,” said Jones, 30.

This week, she launched her new career as a plumber, landing a job at Carrboro Plumbing.

Getting her from plumbing associate to plumber was Hope Renovations, a new skilled trades training program in Orange County specifically for women. It launched in July and graduated its first class this month.

High-wage skilled trade jobs have long been occupied mostly by men. Hope Renovations says that more women can do them and trains them for it.

In addition to its 10-week pre-apprenticeship training program

Pandemic Accelerates Consumer Demand For Personalized Free Sample Boxes

Consumers are eager to discover new brands, and have never been more open to trying free samples from the safety of their own homes. These were among the recent findings from a consumer shopping behavior survey conducted by startup Sampler.

Ninety-eight percent of respondents reported being more open to new brands, while just two percent said they were sticking to familiar products. What’s more, 98 percent of people were more likely to try new products if they had samples delivered to their home compared to picking them up in-store. Marie Chevrier, Sampler’s founder and CEO, said these findings reflected why product sampling is full speed ahead on a digital makeover.

“Being able to digitally target consumers who have an interest in your specific products is light-years ahead of traditional in-store
