COVID-19 couldn’t stop Texas Women’s Foundation from raising close to $1M at 35th annual luncheon

More than 2,000 guests attended Texas Women’s Foundation’s 35th annual luncheon, which was a virtual event due to COVID-19. In the 24 hours that followed the luncheon, another 11,000 watched a recording of the event, which brought together influential business and philanthropic leaders for a conversation with award-winning actress and bestselling author America Ferrera and Laysha Ward, executive vice president and chief external engagement officer for retail giant Target.

Toyota and the Dallas Mavericks sponsored the organization’s principal fundraiser. Toyota VP Bonnie Clinton and Mavs CEO Cynt Marshall co-chaired the event, which raised more than $926,000.

Shy Wolf Sanctuary goes semi-virtual for second annual WolfStock


Yuki the wolfdog has been a resident at Shy Wolf Sanctuary for 10 years, but he recently went viral thanks to an incredible photo.

Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education and Experience Center hopes to replicate the success of its Wolfstock 2019 event — albeit in a different format.

The nonprofit, which shelters and rehabilitates unreleasable wild and captive-bred exotic animals and partners with other organizations like Homebase SWFL and Valerie’s House, will adopt a hybrid model for its Nov. 14 event: Wolfstock 2020.

“We were really looking forward to doing it again this year. Then the pandemic happened,” said executive director Deanna Deppen.

Gardiner’s Swine & Stein pivots to a take-home model for annual celebration

GARDINER — Every year, hundreds of people gather on a Saturday in October on Gardiner’s Water Street to celebrate the season in the style of Oktoberfest, but this year’s Swine & Stein will happen wherever the participants are.

This year, Gardiner Main Street is offering Swine & Stein Brewfest in a Bag to the first 300 to sign up. Those bags will be filled with locally made beers and other festive items — for $75 a bag.

Ongoing public health concern about COVID-19, which has resulted in limits on public gatherings, is behind this year’s pivot and the work it has taken to organize.

Limited holiday gatherings, reduced gift giving, and virtual gift exchanges are all signs of the time
