Growing up outside of Tokyo, Chef Kenji Miyaishi’s mother used to send him off with bento boxes of onigiri rice balls, karaage fried chicken, tamago-yaki egg omelets and vegetables from her garden.

Now, as he’s pivoted his upscale restaurant in Napa, California, to prepare and deliver bento boxes amid the pandemic, he says he aims to serve with the same values of precision, culture and care his mother did.

Bento boxes can be traced back to the Kamakura period in 12th century Japan, and this year — with restaurants relying on takeout and delivery — they’ve become a relevant and culturally authentic way for kaiseki chefs across the country to stay in business.

And some chefs say, at a time of uncertainty, the boxes have also come to symbolize nurturing and comfort.

Amazon Prime Day 2020 kicking off early holiday shopping season amid coronavirus pandemic – Business – Austin American-Statesman

Amazon Prime Day boosts small business shopping, too

Amazon’s annual shopping bonanza known as Prime Day begins Tuesday. Though, not everyone is excited: Campaign groups have urged shoppers to instead spend cash in small, local shops.

They argue the coronavirus pandemic — along with the lockdowns and travel restrictions that followed — has accelerated hardship for small- and medium-sized businesses that rely on foot traffic into their shops. Before COVID-19, many companies were already struggling to compete against the likes of Amazon, which offers quick delivery and access to thousands of products online.

One German trade union urged workers at seven Amazon warehouses in the country to go on strike and advocate for better pay conditions.

VITA moving data center servers as part of transition to cloud, new business model | Govt-and-politics

VITA got high marks from the state agencies for enabling them and their employees to operate remotely after the governor declared the public health emergency on March 12, according to a new report by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, which had been sharply critical of the IT agency a year earlier.

JLARC said last week that VITA had completed the transition to the new multi-vendor system after numerous delays and had provided “critical assistance” to state agencies to operate during the pandemic by expanding remote access by employees to agency computer networks, distributing an additional 2,700 laptop computers and boosting the staffing of its service desk.
